Every morning, Thijs checks and updates his e-mails, course Web sites, and other news. He logs in from his room using wireless ADSL.
Floral breeding is his hobby. So, the probably most important thing in his room is his flowers and orchids. He grew almost all by himself.
When ever he is free, you will find him with a book or magazine. Besides keeping up to date for his Mass Communication studies, he always was a bookworm.
His laundry is clean and smells fresh, but they don't offer a delivery service. Doesn't matter, it's just 100 meters.
In front of his apartment building is a VCD and DVD shop where he can rent or buy all the newest stuff at very low cost.
Running out of cash? Don't worry, the next ATM is never more than 200 meters away. Many Thais take their cash in 500 Baht portions. Thijs takes a bit more but never has much cash in his pockets.
Looking for a book about plants in English? That might become a hard job in Thai book stores.
Besides his plants and books, he collects glasses. Believe it or not, he really keeps them clean in his room. It helps a lot that he doesn't smoke.
When people were free in the past, they took a rest. In modern Bangkok, however, you will likely do some sort of sports. One gets infected by the incredible sportiness of the Thais.
Food shops are open around the clock. Fried chicken with a special sauce recharges your batteries when ever you are running on low energy after a day in Bangkok.
After breakfast, he feeds his fishes he just bought at The Mall, a huge shopping mall nearby. When coming home in the evening, they are hungry again and get some more food.
After lunch, it's time to clean the dishes - the price those have to pay who don't want to live from fast food. Tthijs doesn't like to hire somebody for making up his room.
Fortunately, the laundry is not far from his home. It costs him about 700 Baht a month.
Where ever you are in Bangkok, the next pharmacy is not more than 3 minutes away. Not a reason to get sick, but good to know.
Travelling by bus is one of the best ways to get through Bangkok. Very cheap and no need to suffer when traffic turns bad. If so, just take a nap.
In The Mall, there are always some exhibitions. Today it's a plant exhibition, perfect for our hobby gardener. The change almost by the day. When he visited The Mall last time, there was an exhibition of various goods all offered with a 50% discount.
Finding decoration for a real Dutch Christmas Tree is difficult, and if you find some, it's expensive. Christmas decoration in Thai or Chinese style, however, you find everywhere - all year round, by the way.
You want to send a Christmas card in July? No problem, they are on sale all year round.
This is what he does in the fitness studio. On the roof is a nice pool with clean water. Much better than travelling to the beach all time.
Between The Mall and his apartment, there is a modern and trendy marketplace, Tawanna. Friendly sales people, low prices, and good quality - Thijs is never too tired to make a detour to the market on his way home.
